Benelux Rail Passes - Benelux Rail Pass
The Netherlands are informally called Holland is a country located in Western Europe. The four largest cities in the Netherlands are Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. Amsterdam is the country's most populous city and nominal capital, while The Hague holds the seat of the States General, Cabinet and Supreme Court. The Port of Rotterdam is the busiest seaport in Europe. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the busiest airport in the Netherlands, and the third busiest in Europe. The country is a founding member of the European Union, Eurozone, G10, NATO, OECD, and WTO, as well as a part of the Schengen Area and the trilateral Benelux Union. It hosts several intergovernmental organisations and international courts, many of which are centred in The Hague, which is consequently dubbed 'the world's legal capital'.
It is the largest of four constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In Europe, the Netherlands consists of twelve provinces, bordering Germany to the east, Belgium to the south, and the North Sea to the northwest, with maritime borders in the North Sea with those countries and the United Kingdom. The country's official language is Dutch, with West Frisian as a secondary official language in the province of Friesland.
Rail transport in the Netherlands uses a dense railway network that connects virtually all major towns and cities. There are as many train stations as there are municipalities in the Netherlands. The network totals 3,223 route km. This represents 6,830 kilometres of track as there can be a line running both ways, or two lines running each way on important routes. Three quarters of these lines have been electrified.
Nederlandse Spoorwegen or NS or Dutch Railways is a Dutch state-owned company, the principal passenger railway operator in the Netherlands. Founded in 1938, NS provides rail services on the Dutch main rail network (Dutch: hoofdrailnet). The Dutch rail network is the 7th busiest in the European Union, and 16th busiest in the world.
NS International, formerly NS Hispeed, is the rail operator in the Netherlands that operates international inter-city and high-speed train connections to Belgium (Intercity Direct), France (Thalys), Germany and Switzerland (Intercity-Express). NS International is part of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen. It currently operates both high-speed and non-high-speed services
