Abellio (Transport Company) - AAbellio (Transport Company) - A Abellio is a Dutch public transport company that operates bus and rail services in Germany, and formerly also in Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. It is wholly owned by the Dutch national railway company, Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS). The company initially operated as NedRailways, created in 2004 by EVAG, the city council-owned public transit company of Essen. It promptly expanded into both railway and bus operations in the region. NS acquired NedRailways in December 2008. It adopted the current Abellio branding in January 2010. In 2008, the company co-founded the Dutch joint venture Qbuzz; Abellio wholly acquired it five years later. During July 2017, Qbuzz was sold to Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane subsidiary Busitalia. Between 2009 and 2013, Abellio operated in the Czech Republic, both under its own name and the acquired operator Probo Bus. Abellio began operations in the United Kingdom in 2003, initially via a 59% shareholding in Serco-Abellio. The bus companies Abellio London and Abellio Surrey were acquired from National Express in 2009. Abellio successfully bid for numerous rail franchises, such as Abellio Greater Anglia, Abellio ScotRail, West Midlands Trains, and the Merseyrail franchise. During the early 2020s, following emergency measures to deal with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department for Transport awarded several direct contracts to Abellio, replacing several of their existing franchise agreements. Abellio's UK operations were spun out from the rest of the group in 2023 via a management buyout, this arm now operates as Transport UK Group. Abellio Current Operations Abellio Germany Abellio Deutschland was initially established by EVAG, the city council-owned public transit company of Essen, in 2004. In December 2005, British investment company Star Capital Partners purchased a 75% share in Abellio from the City of Essen. In December 2008, both parties sold their stakes in the venture to the Dutch national railway company, Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS). The Abellio brand was later rolled out to replace the NedRailways brand internationally. Abellio Deutschland Bus In April 2013, Abellio Deutschland announced it would focus on rail transport and sell its three bus companies. In November 2013, VM and Werner were sold to Transport Capital with 220 buses. The remaining KVG business was sold to Rhenus Veniro and the District of Bautzen in October 2014 with 84 buses. Abellio Deutschland Rail By April 2020, Abellio Deutschland operated 50 lines in nine states amounting to 5,518 km with a fleet of 278 trains. Abellio Deutschland owned a 25% share in WestfalenBahn that was founded in 2005. In July 2017, Abellio increased its stake in WestfalenBahn to 100%.
