Scottish Grand Tour Details
  • This classic tour of Scotland departs from Glasgow or Edinburgh and travels on some of the world's most dramatic rail lines: the West Highland Line, Kyle Line, and Highland Main Line.
  • Head north from Glasgow to the Isle of Skye, then east over the Highlands to Inverness.
  • Returning to Edinburgh through the lush farmland of Perthshire.
  • You'll watch the landscapes get steadily wilder as you go - there's no other train journey in the UK with such variety.
  • The travel pass gives you time to explore along the way, and enjoy travel by train, ferry and coach on just one ticket
Don't forget
  • Travel in one direction only (clock or anti clockwise).
  • It's only valid for Standard Class and off-peak travel.
  • Your travel is flexible, but the validity period is not: the 8-day period starts on the first day of travel.
  • Free travel for under 5s, and half price for children aged 5-15.

  • Travel is valid Monday to Friday on trains departing after 0915.
This restrictions does not apply on the following routes:
  • Glasgow Queen St - Fort William/Mallaig and Inverness - Kyle
  • Travel is valid at anytime on Saturday and Sundays.

Includes:

Rail: Travel with ScotRail on the following routes
  • West Highland Line: Glasgow or Edinburgh - Fort William/Mallaig.
  • Kyle Line: Inverness - Kyle of Lochalsh.
  • Highland Main Line: Glasgow or Edinburgh - Inverness via Perth (valid on trains departing after 09:15 and any time at the weekend).
Coach: The coach takes you between Armadale and Kyle of Lochalsh, with Stagecoach.

Bus: Public bus services on Skye can be sporadic and often only operate during the Summer season
  • Stagecoach No 51 operates directly between Armadale (ferry connection) and Kyle of Lochalsh (rail connection) but is only available Monday - Friday
  • For other services (Nos 50, 52, 152, 917) change at Broadford/Armadale Road End on Skye
Scottish Grand Tour Recommended Route
  • Start in Glasgow, heading north on the West Highland Line along the Clyde sea lochs, Loch Lomond and Rannoch Moor.
  • From Fort William the train passes over the Glenfinnan Viaduct (you'll recognise it from Harry Potter).
  • And on to the small fishing and ferry port of Mallaig.
  • From Mallaig, take the CalMac ferry to Armadale on the Southern end of the Isle of Skye.
  • You might like to stop here for a few days to explore the Munros and Faerie Pools.
  • Then take the coach over the Skye Bridge to Kyle of Lochalsh, rejoining the train and setting course for Inverness.
  • From there, you'll get the Main Highland Line south to Edinburgh or Glasgow.
  • The ferry connection between Mallaig and Armadale on Skye, and the coach connection to Kyle of Lochalsh are included in your ticket.
Scottish Grand Tour Journey Times
  • West Highland Line: Glasgow to Mallaig (for the ferry to Armadale) - approx 5 hours 30 minutes.
  • Kyle Line: Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness - approx 2 hours 40 minutes.
  • Highland Main Line: Inverness to Edinburgh - approx 3 hours 30 minutes.
