Zwolle–Emmen Railway TimetableZwolle–Stadskanaal Railway TimetableThe Zwolle - Emmen route was the busiest section of the NOLS network. After the war, a local train ran over the route every hour, supplemented by a single peak-hour train during rush hour. In 1970, the local train service Almelo - Mariënberg was largely extended to Hardenberg. Most trains between Zwolle and Emmen now skipped Bergentheim. This shortened the train service between the two places by a few minutes. In 1975, Bergentheim station was closed and the trains from Almelo now returned in Mariënberg. A pair of trains ran during rush hour to Coevorden, later Gramsbergen. From the mid-1970s, a few express trains ran over the route during rush hour, in the morning to Zwolle and in the afternoon to Emmen. These trains only stopped in Ommen and Coevorden. A pair of trains also stopped in Dalfsen. This shortened the travel time between Zwolle and Emmen to one hour. Zwolle–Stadskanaal Railway Modernisation After electrification and partial doubling of the track, the timetable was improved. From then on, there was a stopping train every hour and, except on Sunday mornings and afternoons, an express train every hour. The express train again only stopped in Ommen and Coevorden. After political pressure from Hardenberg, a stop at Hardenberg station was added. During rush hour, there was also a stop in Dalfsen. The travel time of the express trains was shortened to 51 minutes between Zwolle and Emmen. The stopping trains still took an hour and ten minutes to cover the route. The long travel times of the stopping trains were mainly due to the use of Materieel '54 trainsets and the limited crossing possibilities on the largely single-track route. Zwolle–Stadskanaal Railway Start of the Railhopper In 1993, Talbot built nine Stoptreinmaterieel '90 trainsets in Aachen. The sets served as prototypes for the new NS stoptrein material. The Railhoppers were wider than the existing passenger material and therefore ended up 'out of profile' on many routes. The Emmerlijn was assigned as a test route. The route was specially adapted for this purpose - where necessary. The trainsets proved to be quite susceptible to faults and were soon withdrawn from passenger service. The old Materieel '54 trainsets returned to the Emmerlijn and the test operation without passengers took place on the double-track route between Meppel and Leeuwarden for the time being. In 1995, the Railhoppers returned between Zwolle and Emmen. The sets were mainly used in the local train service between the two places. This was considerably accelerated with the arrival of the new equipment. The local trains now covered the route within an hour. In addition, a few extra peak-hour local trains were added between Zwolle and Ommen. Due to the aforementioned limitations of the route, almost all connections in Zwolle were cancelled with this new timetable. Zwolle–Stadskanaal Railway Plan V In December 2005, the trial operation with the Railhoppers was stopped and the trains were taken out of service. In order to guarantee faster travel times between Zwolle and Emmen, the electrical installation of a number of Plan V trains was simultaneously modified so that they could accelerate faster. A number of the trains were covered with the appropriate text "From now on everything is different! New timetable Zwolle - Emmen". This new timetable meant a shift and adjustment of the train services. Since then, the stopping and express trains have been running in an almost regular half-hourly service, with the express trains making an extra stop in Dalfsen and Nieuw Amsterdam. In Zwolle, the connection to the other trains was also improved. In 2007, the timetable was shifted by about half an hour.
Arriva Operations on the Zwolle–Stadskanaal Railway On 9 December 2012, the line got a new operator: Arriva. When Arriva started, the timetable was expanded. A new peak-hour train between Zwolle and Coevorden, which runs twice an hour, is new. Since 9 December 2012, the express train also stops at Mariënberg, and also runs longer in the evenings. The following train series will use the Emmerlijn in the 2025 timetable : Series Train type Route Particulars
Zwolle–Stadskanaal Railway Expansion of Capacity The province of Overijssel is looking into infrastructural adjustments that will enable higher frequencies (4 times per hour) on the entire Zwolle-Emmen route. Zwolle–Stadskanaal Railway Infrastructure Partly because of the use by freight trains of the line to Coevorden, where there is a transfer station, and the increased passenger demand by commuters, various governments are now advocating for an expansion of the capacity of the railway line. In order to guarantee the current timetable and to be able to improve it even further, the clients (province of Drenthe, province of Overijssel and region Twente) will examine in consultation with the new concession holder where investments are needed. These will be paid from the funds released after the cancellation of the Zuiderzeelijn. Initially, the following measures were considered:
There are also proposals for a station in Bergentheim and at the events hall in Hardenberg. A swing bridge was built over the Coevorden-Vecht Canal between Gramsbergen and Coevorden, making the Euroterminal Coevorden BV directly accessible from 3 May 2017. This means that trains no longer have to turn around in Coevorden. Zwolle–Stadskanaal Railway Timetable Ultimately, the intention is to have at least three and possibly even four trains per hour from Zwolle to Emmen during rush hour. Various scenarios are conceivable for this: two local trains and one express train Zwolle - Emmen, possibly supplemented with an extra express train during rush hour, but also shorter peak services to Ommen or to Hardenberg. Due to the limited infrastructure, local and express trains might have to run coupled over part of the route. Another scenario assumes separate local train services Almelo - Emmen and Zwolle - Hardenberg supplemented by a fast train service Zwolle - Emmen. Some local train passengers to and from Zwolle would then have to change in Coevorden or Hardenberg. Extension of train service Almelo - Mariënberg to Hardenberg In 2016, work was carried out on the track by order of the Provincial Council of Overijssel, after which the train service from Almelo to Mariënberg was extended to Hardenberg. This made it easier to travel from Hardenberg to Twente and vice versa. The work consisted of adjusting the tracks in Mariënberg, adding a switch in Hardenberg, renewing rails and sleepers between Almelo and Mariënberg and closing Geerdijk station.
