Øresund Line History The fixed connection across the Øresund, was inaugurated on 1 July 2000. Between the inauguration and December 2010, the tunnel through Malmö was not in operation and a far longer path was used. Trains had to drive in to Malmö Central Station and (after some 20 minutes, the train could depart for Copenhagen, but then had "to reverse" for several minutes (that is, reverse out of Malmö the same way the trains came in), followed by a long detour which orbited most of Malmö, before reaching the new fixed connection. Malmö South Station was then the last station in Sweden. (But is still in use for local trains and for a few Danish DSB Inter City trains to Ystad, from which car-ferry departure to the Danish Baltic Sea island, Bornholm. (The alternative, car ferries from Danish town Køge to Bornholm takes longer time) Øresund Line Overview Øresund Line Owner: Swedish Transport Administration Banedanmark Øresund Line Termini: Malmö Central Station Copenhagen Central Station Øresund Line Stations: 7 Øresund Line Type: High-speed railway Øresund Line System: Danish railways Swedish railways Øresund Line Operator(s): DSB DSB Øresund SJ Skåne commuter rail Skånetrafiken DB Cargo Green Cargo Øresund Line Rolling Stock: SJ X2 SJ 2000 X 31K EG ET Øresund Line Opened: 2000 Øresund Line Line Length: 46 km Øresund Line Track Length: 92 km Øresund Line Number of Tracks: Double Øresund Line Character: Passenger and freight Øresund Line Track Gauge: 1,435 mm (4 ft 8+1⁄2 in) Øresund Line Electrification: 15 kV 16.7 Hz AC 25 kV 50 Hz AC Øresund Line Operating Speed: 200 km/h (125 mph) | |||||
