Ringsted-Femern Fast and Climate Friendly Railway that Connects Europe

The Ringsted Fehmarn track is one of the largest construction projects in Danish history. The railway will be an important part of a completely new, climate-friendly transport corridor between Denmark and Europe when the Fehmarn tunnel is scheduled to open in 2029. When the Fehmarn railway is ready, you can travel with climate-friendly electric trains between Copenhagen and Hamburg at approx. 2 hours and 30 minutes.

In the years leading up to the opening, Banedanmark is upgrading and modernizing the approx. 115 km long stretch between Ringsted and Holeby, so that commuters and passengers get a modern railway with faster and climate-friendly trains.

Ringsted-Femern when the track is developed, there are:
  • Straighten out curves so that the trains can increase their speed to up to 200 km/h
  • New alignment laid north and south of Glumsø, south of Vordingborg and south of Eskilstrup
  • Built overtaking track north of Glumsø, at Orehoved and Holeby
  • New double track laid between Nykøbing Falster and Holeby
  • Excavated a new channel at Masnedsund to Vordingborg Harbour
  • Rebuilt the platforms at Glumsø Station and Lundby Station
  • Extended the platforms at Vordingborg Station and built a new footbridge
  • Moved and extended the platforms at Nørre Alslev and Eskilstrup stations, as well as built new footbridges
  • Built a new road facility in Eskilstrup as a replacement for the current railway crossing
  • Carried out a major track conversion at Nykøbing F Station and built a new station at Holeby
  • Constructed fauna passageways so that animal species can cross the track
  • Noise insulated 1700 buildings and set up noise screens in selected places
  • Electrified on the entire stretch
  • Built brand new railway bridge over Guldborgsund
  • The railway connection over Masnedsund replaced by a new double-track bridge
Ringsted-Femern Will Give A Faster Journey

When the Fehmarnbelt tunnel is completed, the journey between Rødbyhavn and Puttgarden will take seven minutes by train and 10 minutes by car. Road users and train passengers will save about one hour each way compared to the ferry crossing. The Fehmarnbelt link will be open 24 hours a day as a tunnel is not affected by wind or weather.

Ringsted-Femern Will Give A Greener Transport Route

The Fehmarnbelt link is an important component in the future European transport network and will make an important contribution to the green transition of the transport sector. Enabling traffic to use the shortest and fastest route will reduce CO2 emissions and free up capacity on roads and railways. Switching the transport of freight from lorries to environmental-friendly electric trains will also be more attractive.
