Sønderborg–Tinglev Line (Sønderborgbanen)

Sønderborg Line

Sønderborgbanen is a 42 km long railway between Tinglev and Sønderborg. It was opened in 1901 as a "forked railway" that branched from Tørsbøl to Padborg and Tinglev. The Tørsbøl-Padborg line was closed in 1932.

Sønderborg Line History

The railway was established by the Prussian State Railways, while Southern Jutland was part of the German Empire. Sønderborg was the last of the southern Jutland market towns to get a railway, as the connections by ship between Flensburg and Sønderborg were relatively good. Padborg-Tørsbøl-Sønderborg was the main line in German times, while Tinglev-Tørsbøl was only a side line that created a direct connection with the Tønder-Tinglev line and the rest of what is now Sønder Jutland. After Reunification in 1920, the roles were reversed. Tinglev-Tørsbøl became the new main connection, and in 1932 it was decided that Padborg-Tørsbøl should be closed together with the Broagerbanen.

Sønderborg Line Stopping Points

• Tinglev station (Te) at km 0.0 – connection with the Vamdrup-Padborg line and the Tønder-Tinglev line.
• Bjerndrup stop with siding (Bje) in km 6.0. Reduced to step board 1 March 1962 , closed in 1974 . Station building demolished in 2001, the warehouse has been preserved.
• Kliplev stop with siding (Kw) in km 10.0. Closed in 1974, reopened in 1979 as a stepping stone. Station building demolished in 2004.
• Lundtoft stop with siding (Lf) in km 14.0. Reduced to step board in 1965, closed in 1974.
• Tørsbøl station (Tsb) in km 18.0 – connection with Padborg. Reduced to step board 1969, closed in 1974.
• Rinkenæs station (Rz) in km 22.1. Reduced to step board 1966, closed in 1974.
• Gråsten station (Gst) in km 25.7 – connection with Aabenraa Amts Jernbaner.
• Adsbøl ticket office (Az) in km 28.2. Discontinued as a step board in 1955. Building demolished.
• Avnbøl station (Aw) in km 31.8. Reduced to step board in 1965, closed in 1974.
• Vester Sottrup station (Vt) in km 35.4 – connection with Broagerbanen. Reduced to step board in 1974, later closed. Station building demolished in 1986 .
• Ragebøl stop with siding (Rag) in km 38.2. Reduced to step board 1956, closed in 1963.
• Sønderborg station (Sdb) in km 42 – connection with the Mommark line. 1st station demolished in 1967 and replaced by 2nd station demolished in 2004.

Sønderborg Line Traffic

Before 1920 there were direct trains to/from Flensburg. Local traffic on the line was discontinued in 1974, and the trains now only stop in Kliplev and Gråsten. Today, most connections are with Intercity trains to/from Copenhagen. All freight traffic has ceased. The Sønderborg railway was electrified in the late 1990s. In 2010, Banedanmark carried out an extensive renewal of the track.

Sønderborg–Tinglev Line Starting Points

Sønderborg station is the eastern terminus of the Tinglev–Sønderborg railway line, which connects it to the Fredericia–Padborg railway line and the rest of the Danish rail network at Tinglev. The station opened in 1901. It offers frequent direct InterCity services to Kolding, Odense and Copenhagen.
