Älvdalsbanan

Älvdalsbanan

Älvdalsbanan is a 38 km long railway line that starts in Mora and ends in Märbäck in Älvdalen municipality. The part of the Dalaban that runs between Mora station and Morastrand is actually part of the Älvdalsbanan and the southbound part of the Inlandsbanan that shares the route to Morastrand. The electrification ends just west of Morastrand, after which a switch separates the Inlandsbanan and the Älvdalsbanan.

Älvdalsbanan Traffic

Passenger traffic on the track has long since been discontinued, with the exception of the Vasalopp train which runs to the starting point for Kortvasan and Tjejvasan in Oxberg. Chips and timber dominate today's freight transport. Mainly it is the stretch up to Blyberg that is trafficked. The track is today classified as an S track.

Älvdalsbanan Bridge Replacement in Oxberg

In 2016, the combined road and rail bridge over the Österdalälven in Oxberg was inspected and extensive damage was discovered which forced the track to close. The closure was a major threat to the extensive freight traffic to Blyberg, and therefore a so-called "emergency bridge" was installed as a temporary solution. The emergency bridge was commissioned in June 2017. Two new bridges with separate road and rail traffic are now planned instead of the combined bridge.

Älvdalsbanan History

The line was built as the Mora-Elfdalen Railway (MEJ) and ended in Älvdalen. The inauguration took place in 1900. The plans were to expand it to Elverum in Norway, which did not happen. After belonging to several different private companies, it became state-owned in 1948.

The last passenger train ran in 1961. The line was equipped in 1982, but freight traffic from Blyberg to Älvdalen ceased in 1988. The final stretch Märbäck-Älvdalen (3 km) was demolished in 1995. The old station house in Älvdalen has since been the tourist office.

The stretch Blyberg-Märbäck is not used, but Älvdalen municipality and the Swedish Armed Forces are interested in upgrading it in view of the industry in Märbäck and transport to Älvdalen's shooting range. The residents of Gåsvarv want to tear up the track and make a pedestrian and bicycle path to avoid using national highway 70.
