Mälardalstrafik (MÄLAB ABMälardalstrafik (MÄLAB AB)Mälardalstrafik MÄLAB AB is a company jointly owned by the regional public transport authorities in Mälardalen. Its mission is management and development of regional train traffic in the Mälardal region. Mälardalstrafik uses the brands Mälartåg for traffic and Movingo for period tickets. Mälardalstrafik History The company was founded in 1991 under the name Tåg i Mälardalen AB with the aim of investigating the conditions for a joint principalship for train traffic in the Mälardalen region. In 1995, the company concluded an agreement with SJ on regional train traffic in Mälardalen. Mälardalstrafik and SJ started a company for ticket and traffic cooperation, Trafik i Mälardalen AB. (TiM) This collaboration ended on 30 September 2017 and was replaced with direct agreements between Mälardalstrafik and SJ regarding partly the traffic, partly ticket validity for the Movingo period card. Mälardalstrafik Traffic Agreement In February 2024, Mälardalstrafik announced that the agreement with MTR was prematurely terminated, and instead Transdev took over the train traffic from June 16, 2024. As of 12 December 2021, the trains were operated by MTR. They won the tender in December 2020 and signed an eight-year contract. On April 27, 2021, several media announced that the billion-dollar procurement of train traffic in the Mälardalen must be redone, according to a judgment in the Administrative Court, which gives SJ, which appealed the procurement, the right in its appeal. Despite this, MTR took over traffic in December 2021 based on an interim agreement that runs until December 2023, with the possibility of an extension of up to another 2 years, pending a new agreement gaining legal force. Mälardalstrafik had an agreement with SJ for the period 2017–2021 for the traffic on the regional traffic lines in Mälardalen. The agreement meant that SJ initially carried out traffic for Mälardalstrafik with SJ's existing trains, mainly locomotive-hauled passenger cars but also motor cars. Later in the contract period, the locomotive trains were phased out and replaced with Mälardalstrafik's own vehicles. Mälardalstrafik Tickets Mälardalstrafik is responsible for pricing and selling tickets. Single Tickets Mälardalstrafik sells single tickets for Mälartåg that only include trains, these can be bought in their app and at Resplus retailers such as SJ or Vy.
