Mellansel-Örnsköldsvik RailwayMellansel–Ornskoldsvik RailwayJärnvägslinjen Mellansel–Ornskoldsvik The railway line Mellansel–Örnsköldsvik is a single-track railway in the municipality of Örnsköldsvik. It runs between Mellansel on the Stambanan through upper Norrland and Örnsköldsvik central station where it connects to the Botniabanan. The track is 28 km long and is used by freight trains. Järnvägslinjen Mellansel–Ornskoldsvik History The main line through upper Norrland was built inland for, among other things, military reasons, and the coastal towns received connecting lines. In May 1890 the main line was ready to go to Mellansel and in May 1891 the Riksdag granted the construction of the Mellansel–Örnsköldsvik railway. Statens Järnvägar's construction of the line went quickly and it was completed on October 31, 1892 at a cost of SEK 1,853,098. The land for the railway was obtained free of charge from municipalities, county councils and private landowners. In 1900, passenger traffic was 45,000 passengers per year and freight traffic was 21,000 tons per year. From Örnsköldsvik towards Mellansel there are several strong counterslopes, which during the steam locomotive era caused the average speed of the trains to decrease. The exit from Mellansel started directly from the railway yard until 1977, but after a rebuild it starts from the main line a couple of hundred meters north of Mellansel. A tunnel through Åsberget began to be built by Statens Järnvägar (SJ) in 1954 at a cost of SEK 2 million for an industrial track to AB Hägglund & Söner in Gullänget. The eastern tunnel opening was adapted for a future track connection to Arnäsvall and with the masses from the tunnel a stretch of 3 km was terraced. At the same time, the track between Tvillingsta and Örnsköldsvik was moved in a southwesterly direction. The tunnel and the new track were opened to traffic in 1957. In connection with the construction of the Bothnia Railway, there was a new southern tunnel extension, while the northern part of the tunnel became part of the Bothnia Railway. The industrial track to BAE Systems AB now starts from Örnsköldsvik Norra on the Botniabanan. The local passenger traffic ceased in 1986/87 and the sleeping cars for the night train ceased in 1989. In the fall of 2010, some night trains began to go Mellansel–Örnsköldsvik to continue towards Umeå on the Botnia line. This passenger traffic ceased when the southern part of the Bothnia Line and the Ådals Line opened to traffic in August 2012. The track was electrified in 1998, but the meeting track in Österalnö was not electrified. This means that there is no opportunity for electric vehicles to meet between Mellansel and Örnsköldsvik. Diesel-powered work vehicles, on the other hand, can use the siding in Österalnö.
