Nässjö-Åseda RailwayNässjö–Åseda Railway LineNässjö–Vetlanda–Åseda–Nybro Railway Line The Nässjö–Vetlanda–Åseda–Nybro railway is an originally 138-kilometre-long standard gauge and non-electrified railway line in Sweden. It branches off from the Södra stambana in Nässjö in the Jönköpings län county and formerly ran as far as Nybro on the Kust till kust-bana. Passenger traffic on the Nässjö - Vetlanda section is operated by the regional operator Krösatågen. Traffic on the Vetlanda - Åseda section has been suspended since 2002 and maintenance was stopped by Trafikverket in 2006, but there has not been any formal closure to date. The Åseda - Nybro section was closed in 1986 and subsequently dismantled, the remaining Nässjö - Åseda section is still 74 kilometers long. Nässjö–Vetlanda–Åseda–Nybro Railway Line Construction and Opening In 1874, the Kalmar Railway Company (KJ) opened the railway line from Emmaboda to Kalmar, which is now part of the Kust till kust-banan. The Nybro-Sävsjöström Railway Company (NSJ) then built a branch line from Nybro via Orrefors with its glassworks to Sävsjöström. The NSJ was taken over by the KJ in 1909. At the same time, construction of the line via Åseda and Vetlanda to Nässjö began, where it was connected to the Södra stambana. Nässjö–Vetlanda–Åseda–Nybro Railway Line Shortcut to Stockholm The new route quickly became very popular because it provided a shortcut for trains from Kalmar to Gothenburg or Stockholm compared to the previous connection via Alvest. Express trains and coach connections ran between Kalmar, Gothenburg and Stockholm. Nässjö–Vetlanda–Åseda–Nybro Railway Line Nationalisation The Södra stambana, which connects to Nässjö, was a state railway from the beginning. On 1 July 1938, as part of the general nationalisation of railways in Sweden, the Nässjö–Nybro line and the Alvestra–Kalmar line, which connects to Nybro, were merged into an independent state company, which became the state-owned Statens Järnväger on 1 July 1940. Nässjö–Vetlanda–Åseda–Nybro Railway Line Loss of Significance In the 1950s, the Alvesta–Emmaboda–Kalmar line was electrified. Since the Södra stambana had already been electrified since the end of the Second World War, continuous electric train service to Stockholm and Gothenburg via Alvesta was now possible. As a result, the line via Åseda lost its importance for long-distance traffic. Passenger traffic was only carried by regional trains, mostly railbuses of the Y6 series. Shutdown Åseda–Nybro In the 1980s, responsibility for regional rail passenger transport was transferred from the state-owned railway company SJ to the provincial administrations (Län). The Nässjö–Nybro line ran through three provinces, and only one of them, Jönköpings Län, wanted to continue operating the line. As a result, passenger traffic on the Åseda–Nybro section was discontinued in 1985. A year later, the remaining freight traffic was also discontinued, and this section was subsequently closed and dismantled. In contrast, the Nässjö–Åseda section was first modernized, passenger traffic was upgraded and converted to Y1 railcars, which were modern for the time. However, in 1990, freight traffic south of Vetlanda was discontinued. The Krösa Trains In 1985, the provinces involved founded the Krösatågen transport system for passenger transport on the Nässjö–Åseda and Vaggeryd–Jönköping routes. Also in 1985, the Stensjön and Björköby railway stations were closed and replaced by stops closer to the town centres. Einstellung Vetlanda–Åseda At the timetable change on 15 June 2002, passenger traffic between Vetlanda and Åseda was discontinued, and in 2006 the then railway authority Banverket decided to stop maintenance of this section. There has not been any formal closure to date, and the line is still shown on Trafikverket's maps. Orrefors–Flygsfors Railway Line For a short period of time, there was a line between Orrefors and Flygsfors. The narrow-gauge line, about two kilometers long, was built from 1917 and completed in 1919. It was served by a train with a locomotive and three carriages, transporting sand, soda and glass between the Flysfors glassworks and Orrefors station. The line was used until 1920, but after production was stopped due to the glassworks' bankruptcy, the tracks were demolished again in the 1920s. Remains of the old dam can still be found in the forest, which is used as a hiking trail. Nässjö–Vetlanda–Åseda–Nybro Railway Line Current Operations Since 2002, seven pairs of trains have been running on weekdays except Saturdays, and four pairs of trains made up of class Y31/32 railcars have been running on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. In addition, freight trains ran to the Emådalsbanan, which continues from Vetlanda to Kvillsfors and Pauliström. Trains no longer run on the Vetlanda–Åseda section, as the line is partially overgrown.
