Järnvägslinjen Halmstad–Nässjö

The Halmstad-Nässjö railway line or in Swedish: Järnvägslinjen Halmstad–Nässjö, is a Swedish railway line between Halmstad and Nässjö. The railway is unelectrified in its entirety and only has a single track.

The track was originally built by the private consortium Halmstad-Jönköpings Järnvägsaktiebolag, but the company went bankrupt only three years after construction finished in 1882. The company was reconstructed as Halmstad-Nässjö Järnvägar (HNJ), which owned and operated the railway until the railway line was nationalised in 1945.

Today passenger services are operated on the railway by the public operator Krösatågen. In the coming years the railway will be electrified between Nässjö and Värnamo. A report commissioned by the local government in Halland County completed in 2021 has proposed a closure of services from Halmstad to Jönköping and Värnamo which use the line today, alongside starting rail services to Hyltebruk, which currently only sees freight traffic.

Halmstad–Nässjö Railway Line History

The line is the 196 kilometer long main line for the former railway company Halmstad-Nässjö Järnvägar (HNJ). It was opened for traffic between Halmstad and Värnamo on September 1, 1877, and from Värnamo to Nässjö on December 21, 1882. During its time as a private railway, it was part of one of Sweden's largest private railway companies, Halmstad-Nässjö Järnvägar, which in addition to this line also served Vaggeryd - Jönköping and Landeryd – Falköping Ranten (Västra Centralbanan). In the 1930s, the track had one of Sweden's highest track standards, with a maximum permitted speed of 110 km/h.

The line was nationalized in 1945 when Statens Järnvägar (SJ) redeemed HNJ. After that, no significant track maintenance was carried out until the 1990s. During the 1980s and 90s, there was periodic talk of closure. In late 2006, the then Banverket, proposed that a part of the line south of Värnamo should be closed down. To shorten the journey time on the line, several stations were closed in 1996, including Sperlingsholm, Johansfors, Fröslida, Skeppshult and Kärda.

From Torup, there is a siding to Hyltebruk, which was inaugurated in its entirety in 1909. It goes via Rydöbruk to Hyltebruk, where until 1996 passenger traffic was run, but now only freight.

From Kinnared there was a railway to Fegen called Kinnared–Fegens Järnväg. It was inaugurated in 1885 but was later sold to HNJ. From Fegen via the Fegen–Ätrans Railway you could go on to both Varberg and Falkenberg. The Kinnared–Fegens Railway ended in 1961.

Halmstad–Nässjö Railway Line Passenger Traffic

The line is serviced by Krösatågen, and the service is carried out by SJ and operated with diesel locomotives (Y31 and Y32) which replaced the former Y1's.

Halmstad–Nässjö Railway Line Freight Traffic

Until October 2020, paper freight was run to and from Hyltebruk-Halmstad and then later returned to paper freight again.

Containers go from the Port of Gothenburg via Värnamo to Båramo north of Skillingaryd, where they are reloaded onto trucks. The traffic is operated by Green Cargo.
