Mora-Märbäck Railway

Mora-Märbäck Railway (Älvdalsbanan)

The Mora-Märbäck railway is the shortened part that remains of the Mora-Älvdalen Railway (MEJ).

Mora-Märbäck Railway History

In the early 1890s, Älvdalen municipality set aside one million kroner for the construction of a railway to Mora, and the Mora-Elfdalen Railway Company was formed. After three years of work, the line could be inaugurated in November 1900. There were plans to continue the line construction from Älvdalen to Elverum in Norway and thus create an international connection, but it never happened.

Mora-Märbäck Railway Many Companies Involved

From the very beginning, the Älvdalsbanan became entangled in various tours between the other railway companies in the area. At first, Mora-Vänerns Järnväg (MVJ) managed the traffic on the line, but in 1906, MEJ went bankrupt. Falun-Rättvik-Mora Railway (FRMJ) then bought the company on executive action and MEJ was formally taken over in 1909. FRMJ, in turn, had a close collaboration with Gävle-Dala Railway (GDJ) and was completely absorbed by this company in 1920. From this year on thus the Älvdalsbanan part of GDJ and they started running direct passenger trains Falun-Älvdalen.

Mora-Märbäck Railway Nationalisation

In connection with GDJ being nationalised in 1948, the track became part of SJ's network. Passenger traffic, which had been modest since the 1930s, was stopped entirely in 1961. Freight traffic continued, however, with timber and wood products as the most important types of transport. The steam locomotives were replaced with diesel locomotives and during the 1970s, multiple coupled Tb locomotives were common as traction power, especially in summer when the locomotives were freed from their usual duty as snow plows.
