Bastuträsk-Skelleftehamn Railway (Skelleftebanan)

Bastuträsk-Skelleftehamn Railway (Skelleftebanan)

The Skelleftebanan connects Skellefteå and Skelleftehamn to the Main Line Through Upper Norrland at Bastuträsk.

The length of the track Bastuträsk-Skelleftehamn is 64 km. The dual carriageway Boliden-Slind was 24 km and the stretch Skelleftehamn-Rönnskär is 2 km long. These were built by Boliden AB when the mine and smelter were opened. The line was electrified in 1997 and since 1990 has only been served by freight trains .

Bastuträsk-Skelleftehamn Railway (Skelleftebanan) History

The line Bastuträsk-Klutmark was opened in 1910. In 1912 the line was ready to Skellefteå and in 1914 the line to Skelleftehamn was opened .

Between Skellefteå city and Skelleftehamn there were about 20 stops. The passenger traffic on that route therefore had a lot of the character of local traffic.

Passenger traffic on the Skelleftebanan was shut down in stages. In 1958, the worker trains to Rönnskär ceased. The local passenger traffic Skellefteå−Skelleftehamn upper disappeared in 1964. In 1987 the sleeping car from Stockholm to Skellefteå was withdrawn and in 1990 all passenger traffic on the Skelleftebanan ceased completely. After that, the track is used exclusively for freight traffic.

Skellefteå station was left unattended in 1996 (the line stations had already ceased) and the ore service Boliden-Rönnskär ceased in 1991, in connection with this the track was removed between Boliden and Slind. At the same time, the line has emerged in a new guise, electrified in 1997 and modernized with new rails and a new freight terminal. The line Skelleftehamns nedre-Rönnskär was taken over by the then Banverket (now Trafikverket) in 1996.

Bastuträsk-Skelleftehamn Railway (Skelleftebanan) Future

An investigation was carried out in 2009 about starting commuter train traffic on the Bastuträsk (some trips)-Skellefteå-Skelleftehamn and Vännäs-Holmsund routes. Such commuter train traffic would take just over 40 minutes with stops in Krångfors, Medle, Skellefteå, Bergsbyn/Gunsen/Bergsängen and Skelleftehamn. If a train line to Umeå from Skellefteå were to be started, it would currently go (via Stambanan) approximately 5 minutes faster than a bus journey via E4. Local trains were later introduced on the route Vännäs–Umeå.

After an investigation in 2010 about a new station along the track, a location in Södra Grundfors two kilometers east of Finnforsfallet was proposed. The investigation for the final design has not started.

It was planned that night train traffic would start in April 2022 to and from Skellefteå, but it did not happen as a reconstruction cost of 40 million would be required.

A new railway is planned between Umeå and Luleå via Skellefteå, Norrbotniabanan. In the case of a staged expansion, traffic on the Skelleftebanan increases when the first stage to Skellefteå-Norrbotniabanan is opened to traffic.
