Örbyhus–Hallstavik Railway Line

Järnvägslinjen Örbyhus–Hallstavik

The railway line between Örbyhus and Hallstavik, Hargshamnsbanan, in Tierps, Östhammars and Norrtälje municipalities in Uppland is a standard gauge railway with freight traffic.

Örbyhus–Hallstavik Railway Line History

The Örbyhus–Hallstavik railway line is a merger of parts of two older lines and a newly built section. Örbyhus– Dannemora (9 km) built as standard gauge by the Uppsala–Gävle Railway and inaugurated in 1874. The Uppsala–Gävle Railway was redeemed according to a parliamentary decision by the state in 1933 and amounted to Statens järnvägar. The section Dannemora– Hargshamn follows the narrow-gauge Dannemora–Hargs Railway (DHJ) (39 km) which was opened for ore traffic in 1876 and bought by the state in 1951. The section was converted to standard gauge in 1970 but already in 1961 a bypass track had been built at Dannemora and a third rail had been added to Gimo for standard gauge.

In connection with the closure of the narrow-gauge railway Stockholm–Roslagens Järnvägar to Hallstavik, a new standard-gauge railway was built by the state between Hargshamn and Hallstavik (16 km). It was built for freight traffic to the paper mill and was opened in May 1977 and thus the entire current route was completed.

Before mining ceased in Dannemora in 1992, ore was taken to Oxelösunds Järnverk. There was a train ferry from Hargshamn to Nystad in Finland between 1989 and 1996.

Örbyhus–Hallstavik Railway Line Upgrading

Warn sleepers were replaced with better used wooden sleepers in 2010/2011. The track was straightened and other maintenance work was carried out to be able to run ore transports from the mine in Dannemora to the harbor in Hargshamn. The total cost of the refurbishment amounted to SEK 110 million. The same upgrade first included expansion of ERTMS Regional (Level 3), which was first postponed until 2016, and then was not implemented.
