The Storuman–Hällnäs Railway Line

The Storuman–Hällnäs railway line is a railway between Storuman and Hällnäs in Västerbotten County. Since August 2011, there has been passenger traffic again between Lycksele and Hällnäs.

Storuman–Hällnäs Railway Line History

In 1907, a motion was made in the Riksdag about a connection over Lycksele between the main line through upper Norrland and the proposed Inlandsbanan. After a decision in 1916 that the entire Inlandsbanan was to be built, the Riksdag decided in 1917 that three cross railways would be built and in 1918 the stretch Hällnäs–Stensele received the first grant. The railway began to be built and in 1922 the first part from Hällnäs to Åmsele was opened for provisional goods traffic and in 1923 it was ready to Ume river before Lycksele. The stretch Hällnäs–Lycksele was opened to public traffic on December 16, 1924. The government wanted to postpone the continuation to Storuman, but the Riksdag allocated money in 1924. Provisional freight traffic began to Umgransele in 1926 and to Åskilje in 1927. The stretch between Lycksele and Storuman opened to public traffic on December 1 1930.

Passenger traffic with motorcar Y1 was discontinued in 1995, but on the section between Lycksele and Storuman already in 1992. Passenger traffic resumed in August 2011 with motorcar Y31 between Lycksele and Hällnäs.

Storuman–Hällnäs Railway Line Route

The line, which is the longest of the three cross lines built between the Inlandsbanan and the Stambanan through upper Norrland, is just under 17 miles, has joint tracks, is single-track, not electrified and a so-called System M section (formerly TAM), where traffic is regulated by train dispatchers at the respective station. Since autumn 2019, it has been possible to meet at two stations along the route: Lycksele and the reopened Åmsele station. The track has relatively many straight sections, especially west of Lycksele, which are, however, often broken by speed-reducing curves, which become dimensioning for the entire track's speed standard. East of Lycksele, the track is significantly curvier.

The track mainly has wooden sleepers with nail reinforcements and macadam ballast, but with insufficient depth. The maximum speed of the freight trains is 70 km/h and the track allows an axle load of 22.5 tons. Before the resumption of passenger traffic to Lycksele, speed-increasing track maintenance was carried out in autumn 2011 and the maximum speed for motor coaches on parts of the route between Lycksele and Hällnäs was increased to 90 km/h.
